Russian Lips or Traditional Lip Filler? How to Choose

Russian lips is the most consistently described of the trend labels. A training guide for injectors and two clinic guides agree on where the filler goes, what it is trying to do, which kind of filler it needs and what the side profile should look like. One of them gives a typical amount and one gives how long it is reported to last. That is more information than most style names carry.

“Traditional filler” carries none of that. It is what ordinary lip augmentation gets called once something else has been given a name, and it can mean almost any product, placement or amount. The defining feature of Russian lips is not the front view. It is the side one. Because the filler is placed to lift the body of the lip upward rather than push it forward, the profile stays close to where it started. Sources present that flatness as the deliberate trade the look makes, and it is the reason the result avoids a rounded pout.

That matters when you bring reference photos. A front-facing, tightly cropped image cannot show you which of the two you are looking at. Bring a profile view too, and ask which of the features in your reference come from placement and which come from angle, lighting or swelling.

If the thing you want is a taller upper lip, higher and more distinct peaks and a crisper edge, with the side profile left much as it is, the question to bring is about Russian lips. If it is fuller lips that come forward more, or fullness in the lower lip as well, that is traditional filler territory, and the useful question is where the filler would go and how much, not what the plan is called.

If you are not sure which, a preview on your own photo can put the two side by side from the front. It works from a single front-facing photo, so it cannot show your profile; judge the side view from separate profile reference photos, and ask the injector how the plan would change yours. A photo preview renders a product and an amount, not a technique, so use it to decide what to ask for rather than to request a number.

Neither is automatically right, and neither can promise a shape. The decision belongs to a qualified injector who has seen your lips. Your job is to arrive knowing which feature you mean.

One clinic guide puts the amount at 0.5 to 1 mL and says the technique usually costs more than standard lip filler because it takes more precision and more time. Prices vary widely by city and provider. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists a U.S. average of $743 for lip augmentation with dermal fillers in its latest published statistics, checked in September 2026; the figure is U.S.-specific, changes over time, and is not a quote. Ask the clinic what they charge for the amount they would use and whether the technique changes the price.

A training guide for injectors reports results lasting 6 to 12 months and says regular touch-ups keep the shape. One clinic says it may take more than one session. Duration varies by person, product and placement, so ask the injector what they expect for you and when they would want to review it.

Filler is a medical procedure with common and serious risks whatever the technique is called. Regulators list swelling, bruising, lumps and, rarely, filler placed into a blood vessel. Whether the product is approved, the injector's knowledge of the anatomy, the injection plan, their training and their readiness for complications all matter more than the name.

One clinic guide lists the risks of poor placement for Russian lips as a bluish tint along the lip edge, called the Tyndall effect, filler moving above the lip line, and uneven peaks. Another mentions lumps and asymmetry. Ask for the exact product labelling and how the provider handles a blocked blood vessel and other complications.

Weaker than the confidence the name is used with. The sources describing Russian lips are training material and clinic content, not peer-reviewed studies. None of them is a trial, none gives a medical definition, and none shows that the technique produces a different long-term result from any other approach.

Consistency between those sources is worth something. It means the name communicates a real intention. It is not the same as a medical standard, and it does not make the name a substitute for a written plan.

Say the name if it is the shortest way to describe what you want, then make it specific. The useful question is not whether the clinic offers Russian lips. It is whether they think it suits your lips, and what they would do differently if it does not.
